Irelande, 1599; Map by Baptista Boazio (Italian, fl. 1588–1606); engraved by Renolde Elstrack (English, 1570–c. 1625)
Copper engraving, 53 x 82 cm (207⁄8 x 325⁄16 in.)
Italian cartographer Baptista Boazio and English engraver Renolde Elstrack were foremost professionals in their respective fields. Their somewhat unusual 1599 map of Ireland—oriented with north to the right—was created using a “Scale of 30 Common myles of Irland.” This map is signed “Your Majesties most Humble and loyall subject, Baptista Boazio” and “graven by Renolde Elstrack” and notes that “Theise Descriptions of Ireland are to be sould in the popes head Alley, by Mr Sudbury.”
